Short-form and long-form feature writing allow deeper exploration of a subject than news reporting and require thorough research and interviews with a range of people. Opinion writing provides greater freedom of expression, because when you are reporting you’re encapsulating the views of others, not your own.
In this module we will explore the differences and nuances between both forms of writing. In particular, we will concentrate on opinion pieces through the te ao Māori worldview and encourage deeper thinking into opinions, sharing it in the hope that other people feel the same way and will benefit from your words.
You don’t have to be an expert to write an opinion piece but it helps to have some first-hand experience to draw on. Be well-researched, know your subject and of course have a strong opinion about it. What side of the fence are you on?
